Man Ray and Lee Miller at Legion of Honor

Last week at the Legion of Honor,  I had the pleasure of attending the press preview of the new "Man Ray | Lee Miller, Partners in Surrealism" show in San Francisco. 

It's always great to hear the perspective of the house curator (in this case Julian Cox), but also the original curator from the Peabody Essex was there and the son of Lee Miller, all the way from England.

I have to confess I didn't know of their story, their love affair and their legacy as collaborators in photography.  Hearing perspective from her son was really a special treat.  

The selections of prints and sculpture shown is very poigniant and the window into their relationship, via letters to one another, showed an incredible tenderness between them.

It was also really nice to be reminded that even amazing fine photographers like Man Ray worked in commercial photography.  Both were cited quite often throughout the show as to how they had to "pay the bills" by shooting for magazines, and even advertisers.  She was a war photographer for Conde Nast, during WWII, after starting out as a fashion model.

Colorful Carotene

I was recently at Union Square Green Market to pick up some maple candy from Deep Mountain (http://deepmountainmaple.com/green-market) for friends.

Lower Eats Side (Pun Intended)

In NYC, on my way to have French Onion Soup Dumplings at The Stanton Social, I happened across this amazing macaron shop: Biscous Ciao (http://www.bisousciao.com/). Bright, colorful and simple interior design, this was a shop you wanted to step into! And, the macarons were delightful. I shared a dulce de leche as an appetizer!

Barndiva - Salon des Sens

Barndiva's Salon des Sens exhibition was quite a success during the opening reception this weekend. A big thank you to Studio Barndiva and Curator Maggie Spicer who organized quite a 'palatable' exhibition revolving around the food we eat.

As I flowed through the crowds, it was quite evident how art can influence our relationship to food. A buzz of excitement and conversations about food were aroused as people moved about the exhibition of food photography, paintings and installations.

SFMOMA- Fort Mason Art Sale

Art collectors, artists and art lovers, visit SFMOMA's 19th Annual Artists Warehouse Sale at Fort Mason. Lots of great art and photography at steep discounts!  Wednesday night was off the charts with people supporting the participating artists, Artists Gallery and SFMOMA. Two days remain to check out the buzz!

 

terra cibus in September Issue of San Francisco Magazine

"You First" OCCCA Group Show, Orange, CA, 1 October - 29 October, 2011

"terra cibus no.20: sugar 1" will be a part of this show. In conjunction with the artist reception, OCCCA will be hosting the official TEDxSAArtistsVillage (post conference) After Party. I will be attending and hope to see you at the festivities.

 

International Photography Awards

 

 

 

I was incredibly honored that my "terra cibus" series took third place in the International Photography Awards. I hope to be on hand at the exhibition at Splashlight Studios in New York on October 22.

Oren's Kitchen

We gained a couple pounds this week thanks to Arnon Oren of Oren's Kitchen and his slow-roasted artisan nuts. It is the pleasure and the burden of a food photography studio to be given such tasty food gifts.

We shot images for his catering services and those scrumptiously addictive nuts which, incidentally, can also be purchased at Whole Foods if you'd like to develop an addiction of your own.
